[This post is part of the “4 Hour Campus Plant” series. I am live blogging my attempt to plant a ministry at a new campus with only 4 hours a week. This is a continuous story that builds, so make sure to start at the beginning.]
May 8, 2015
After the meeting with Pastor Sean at the Mexican restaurant, I couldn’t contain my excited nor wait to get back together with him to talk and pray about LBCC. He made it clear to me that he had some time to give to this venture, so we schedule a meeting for the next Friday at my office.
I was expecting to lay out some vision to him about how we could go about gathering a core team of students. I also wanted to ask him to suggest a few of the key people that should be involved.
But then he text me about thirty minutes before the meeting and asked if it would be cool if he brought Kimy – a LBCC student.
Meet Kimy
I was not expecting this meeting today, and I definitely wasn’t expecting such an excited student. Her passion, along with Sean’s, is obvious and there is no greater feeling for a planter like me to have two people, with connections to others, so fired up to plant and be coached by me.
The Invitation
The invitation I gave her was to invite the most solid group of her friends to gather and meet with me next week to start going through InterVarsity’s student planting manual “Start Something New“. We made a list together of her top 5-7 friends and she was given the task to call them and invite them to a time the following week to meet up on campus.
The Lesson Learned
Be urgent to follow a hunch. When Sean and I met up for lunch the week before and I heard his passion, I couldn’t wait to meet again. Because this isn’t my full time job it would have been very easy for this to get pushed off until summer. But I had a hunch and I knew I needed to follow it. God was up to something and it was urgent.
So, Sean and I made a time and he invited Kimy.
Game on.
What I Was Thinking
As I left the meeting I was thinking about how excited I was that Kimy was so fired up. Did she really know 20 people that could join this start up? That is incredibly exciting! How had this not been planted before now!? Would she really follow through and call the people and set up a meeting? I mean, I have tried to start many many things, and have dealt with tons of flaky students over the years. So part of me was worried she would get scared and keep it at an idea level. This felt different to me though, and I was confident. In fact, I felt sure. I would have been shocked if she didn’t execute in some concrete manner.
For now, the anticipation builds…
What strikes you about this encounter?
